lyrics

I had a friend named John DeMent everybody called him Jack
He lived on chapel street in a one room clapboard shack
Hadn’t kissed a girl since Deb at senior prom in ‘98
He left her at the party and slipped out the back gate

He always was an odd duck my mother’s fond of saying
He was doing crosswords puzzles while the other kids was playing
Jack never had a problem with being on his own
He went out of his way to walk this world alone

One night I asked him bout it when we were both out of our heads
He looked at me with secret eyes leaned in close & said
I’ve never told another soul brother I confess
The only thing that makes me happy is the pursuit of loneliness

I introduced him to my cousin Pam down at Debra’s Pub
They danced to Patsy Cline like two people in love
But Jack was a magician I looked up and he was gone
When he missed the bus to work I knew something must be wrong

One night I asked him ‘bout it when we were both out of our heads
He looked at me with secret eyes leaned in close & said
I’ve never told another soul brother I confess
The only thing that makes me happy is the pursuit of loneliness

All the lights were on as I knocked hard on his front door
I peeked in through the window Jack was lying on the floor
One artificial rose gripped tightly in his hand
The coroner said a heart attack he never stood a chance

Do not cry for Jack DeMent let’s raise a glass instead
One night with secret eyes he leaned in close & said
I’ve never told another soul brother I confess
The only thing that makes me happy is the pursuit of loneliness
Here’s to old Jack & the pursuit of loneliness
